Why you should focus on Cloud Security in the next 12 months
Three reasons why cloud security is going to be red hot even in a recession
There seems to be doom and gloom everywhere in 2022 with news of a recession hitting us soon ( or already upon us )
Guess what .. this recession if it happens will pass and the job market will start booming again.
The trick is not to get distracted and always make sure you have skills that are in-demand in the industry should you find yourself being made redundant
One of the safest bets right now is Cloud Security and learning this should be one of your top priorities as a cyber-security professional.
The rate of cloud adoption has exploded in this new post-pandemic world that we live in and more and more companies are accelerating their cloud roadmaps.
The need for cloud security professionals is only going to sky-rocket in the coming years and now is the best time to invest in your future career
If that still does not convince you then here are a few key reasons below
Reason #1 : Cloud is not going away anytime soon
At the start of the year Gartner’s predictions for the top technology trends for 2022 showed Cloud Native Platforms as one of the major trends that companies will adopt
Cloud Native Platforms are cloud applications that are built natively for the cloud as opposed to “lift and shift” applications which are migrated from on-prem.
More and more organizations are no longer going to just copy-paste their on-prem applications to the cloud and will initiate projects to re-engineer them to work in a serverless / micro-services /containerized world.
As applications become more “cloud aware” so they can take advantage of cloud elasticity and computing power; cloud native skills will be needed to mitigate the risks they introduce with this trend continuing into the future.
Reason #2 : On-prem skills will go the way of the dinosaur
If high demand doesn’t convince you then let me provide another good reason for learning Cloud Security right now and that is pure on-prem security skills are on the way out .
It is not going to happen overnight but if you dont have any cloud security skills then you the run the risk of being left behind when your company adopts cloud on scale.
Take a look at the below and let me know if you have any of the skills below :
Serverless
Infrastructure as Code
Securing hybrid clouds
Securing Containers and Orchestration
If the answer is NO and you are still busy securing physical infrastructures doing data center reviews, manual configurations etc. then I hate to tell you this but you have a skillset that has a limited lifespan.
Invest in learning cloud security now . No need for costly training courses as I have started a dedicated YouTube for this which you can subscribe to here.
Reason #3 : Cyber-crime is already using the Cloud
Last reason and this should really motivate you if none of the above reasons worked which is … Cyber-criminals are already using the cloud.
Yes .. the raw computing power and elastic storage which the cloud provides gives real business value to cyber-crime and criminals have not been slow to adopt the cloud.
This gives them the ability to quickly mine and process the huge amounts of data they steal and the window between stealing data and monetizing it has become much smaller due to the cloud.
Check out the fascinating insights by Trend Micro here on how the cloud has empowered cyber-criminals
“Cloud services and technologies enable businesses to be more agile, scalable, and cost-effective. The business of selling access to a cloud of logs does the same, but for cybercrime. The cloud has equipped illegal businesses operated by criminals with the capability to effectively manage massive datasets and deliver services. By using cloud platforms, criminals are provided with the technology to efficiently mine, process, and host massive amounts of stolen data” — Trend Micro Report
