Stop worrying about AI taking your Cybersecurity job .. Do This instead
Like it or hate it .. AI is here to stay in Cybersecurity
Hello fellow Cybersecurity Enthusiasts. I have been noticing a strange trend whenever I talk to my peers about Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption in Cybersecurity.
Most people seem to be fall into one of three camps when it comes to the topic of AI
First are the people who are convinced that AI is a sky-falling, job-stealing monster, but they’re too scared or disinterested to learn more about it. They want to pretend that AI wont impact them. Spoiler alert: it will
Next, are the cybersecurity folks, who are living blissfully under a rock, unaware of the massive shifts happening in the AI landscape. They are worried but confident their position will not be impacted by AI. Again, spoiler alert: it might.
Thirdly, we have the forward-thinking, enthusiastic individuals who’ve decided to dive right in and learn how they can leverage AI for their benefit. They’re like the third little pig, who built his house out of bricks and was ready for whatever the big bad wolf had to throw at him.
Now, why are the first two groups so scared? It’s because they’re passively absorbing information about AI instead of actively using it to their advantage.
AI is going to be a game-changer within cybersecurity.
Remember how ChatGPT reached 100 million users in two months? That’s faster than any app in history !
It’s bringing a boost to productivity, making security data accessible via prompts, automating tasks, predicting risks, and lowering the bar for entry.
But, there’s a twist…
AI also introduces new threats, boosts social engineering attacks, creates deep fake scams, mutates malware, and yes, lowers the bar for entry (which can be a double-edged sword).
Generative AI is evolving faster than a werewolf under a full moon.
It’s becoming a key part of most business applications and getting closer to sensitive data.
New and unique risks are being introduced, and ignoring it is is NOT an option
So .. What to do
An important thing to realize is that AI is here to take over the boring, repetitive stuff
Low level decision making can be offloaded to an AI giving us the ability to focus on more important stuff
But that does mean that if you have been doing cybersecurity tasks vulnerable to automation like responding to email alerts .. closing tickets .. downloading PDF reports and emailing them .. then you need to upskill NOW
AI is also going to introduce its own unique risks to secure which will become a niche by itself
Focus on learning AI .. how it works and importantly how to secure it
I have made a short guide on how to start which you can access below
Remember that AI is not close to replacing the human ability to understand context, exercise judgment, and consider the broader implications of doing X instead of Y during an incident
So .. do not be like the first two people who are too afraid to embrace this new reality
Be the third one, embracing AI, understanding its strengths and weaknesses, and using it to build a stronger, more secure house.
Remember, in the world of cybersecurity, maintaining the human element is not just important, it’s essential.
In conclusion, AI is not the big bad wolf of cybersecurity, but a powerful ally if we learn to use it wisely. I
AI is here to stay. It’s time to stop fearing it, start understanding it, and begin harnessing its power for our benefit.
There you have it. I hope you realize that this is an exciting time to be involved in the AI security space. If you find this topic interesting, check out my book on A.I. governance and Cybersecurity, which goes over new types of AI risks and how to mitigate them.
