Let’s start with the uncomfortable truth.
Some roles are becoming endangered species — not because they’re unimportant, but because they’re increasingly being done better, faster, and cheaper by AI or automation platforms.
1. Tier 1 SOC Analysts
If your job is mostly clicking through alerts, applying standard playbooks, or escalating based on basic criteria — AI already does it better.
SOAR platforms, agentic AI, and even GenAI copilots are ingesting alerts, correlating signals, and deciding next steps faster than any human.

The days of manually compiling 20-page risk reports or security assessments are numbered.

These are the roles your future CISO will expect to fill fast.
1. AI Security Advisor
These professionals sit between security and data science teams. They:
Audit AI pipelines for bias, leakage, and poisoning
Evaluate model security (prompt injection, data extraction)
Define secure AI deployment patterns across cloud infrastructure
2. Privacy Engineer for GenAI
Privacy engineering isn’t new — but it’s evolving fast. The focus now includes:

Think of this as the SOAR Engineer 2.0. They:

Here’s the good news:
You don’t need a PhD in machine learning or a brand-new degree to adapt.

Cloud security skills are foundational for everything else. All the AI systems are going to be hosted on the cloud and someone needs to secure them.
We’re already seeing early programs focused on AI risk, red-teaming, prompt injection, and governance. Expect NIST, (ISC)², and SANS to formalize these soon. If you’re early to this space, you’ll stand out.
If you’re on the red team side, this is your time to shine. New tooling and certifications will emerge around testing AI models, fuzzing training data, and simulating intelligent adversaries.
Declining in Value:
If the goal is just to prove you can “operate” a scanner, SIEM, or EDR tool — AI is already replacing that capability. What matters now is how you use the tool strategically, automate it, and communicate findings effectively.
Legacy firewall or endpoint-focused certs without modern cloud, AI, or automation context
