ChatGPT Code Interpreter will be a Game Changer for Cyber Security
Do not ignore what Code Interpreter means if you are in the Cybersecurity Industry
ChatGPT continues to be the gift that keeps on giving ( in a good way ! ) as we keep getting newer and more awesome features regularly
We have barely gotten used to ChatGPT 4, internet browsing (although that seems to be on hold), Plugins .. and now .. Code Interpreter
This is a significant game-changer as ChatGPT goes from passively generating code to executing it within a sandbox
This will be a game changer for a lot of industries .. Cybersecurity included
The ability to execute code with simple natural language prompts is simply too good to ignore and we can expect massive adoption across industries
ChatGPT is rapidly taking away technical barriers to a lot of jobs .. whether we like it or not !
You don't need to know Python anymore to execute complex data analysis or generate visualizations based on raw data
ChatGPT Code Interpreter will do all the heavy lifting for you
What does this mean for Cybersecurity?
Enabling code interpreter essentially gives you an AI driven data scientist
It is available to ChatGPT plus users and can be enabled via the settings tab.
It then becomes accessible via the regular prompt screen
Like I mentioned it gives ChatGPT the ability to execute code instead of just passively generating it
Users can also upload files for complex data analysis
I have a personal AWS Account I used for playing around with cloud services and I downloaded the CloudTrail (AWS audit trail) in a CSV format.
I then uploaded the file and asked Code Interpreter to analyze it.
An interesting feature is the ability to see the python code that Code Interpreter generates
It analyzed the data and then told me what it meant
It also gave me further details the users and events within the audit trail
The ability to get this much analysis without writing a line of code is pretty impressive
Note that I am not asking people to start uploading their production audit trails into Code Interpreter btw :) .. this is just a preview of what is now possible

This is MASSIVE news for people who have data analysis needs:
No coding knowledge needed
No coding environment needed
As Cybersecurity professionals I can almost promise you that businesses will start adopting this at scale
Unless proper awareness is done .. you will have the typical genius users uploading production CSV files for data analysis into ChatGPT !!
One of the most common jobs that data scientists need doing is cleaning up raw data and guess what Code Interpreter can do easily ??
The current sandbox has a limited number of python libraries and is not connected to the internet
But .. it is only a matter of time before attackers bypass the guardrails and “jailbreak” Code Interpreter to generate and execute malicious code
I would recommend Cybersecurity professional start getting hands on with this tool ASAP to learn how it works and threat model the possible use cases

I cannot even begin to put in the number of use cases that are now possible with ChatGPT
It is not just about coders or data scientists losing their jobs anymore but potentially a complete change in how things will be done going forward
Whether you like it or not .. you will probably see some form of this being adopted within the workplace
We can only imagine how this tool will mature in the coming years
By making coding so accessible, ChatGPT is making these powerful tools accessible to everyone which is both a good and a bad thing !
This is an exciting (and terrifying) time to be alive and I am excited to see how this tech evolves in the coming months
