Very few can prove it.
Reading the EU AI Act is not a project. Completing a course on the NIST AI Risk Management Framework is not a project. Framework literacy matters.. but in 2026, organisations are looking for people who can translate those frameworks into something operational.
If you want to stand out, you need evidence. Real artifacts. Structured thinking. Practical outputs.
Below are five projects you can build and publish in a GitHub repository to demonstrate that you understand risk-based classification, responsible AI principles, and how frameworks like the EU AI Act and the National Institute of Standards and Technology AI Risk Management Framework actually work in practice.
These projects simulate the kind of work companies are genuinely struggling with right now.
Project 1: AI System Inventory & Classification Engine
One of the most common governance gaps in organisations today is surprisingly simple: they don’t actually know what AI systems they are running.
For this project, create a structured AI system inventory for a fictional but realistic company. For example, imagine a fintech firm using AI for credit scoring, fraud detection, customer support chatbots, and marketing personalization.
Your repository could include a clearly structured inventory document (spreadsheet or structured data format) that captures each system’s purpose, data sources, business impact, owner, and review cycle. Then apply the EU AI Act’s risk-based logic and classify each system. Explain your reasoning. Why is one considered high-risk? Why is another limited-risk? What obligations follow from that classification?
To deepen the project, map each system to the four functions of the NIST AI RMF (Govern, Map, Measure, Manage) and explain which controls align with each stage.
This project demonstrates that you understand proportionality. It shows you can connect regulatory classification to practical oversight decisions. That alone separates you from most candidates.
Project 2: AI Risk Assessment & Governance Review Pack
For the second project, go deeper into a single high-impact use case. Imagine an AI recruitment tool used to screen CVs and shortlist candidates.
Instead of just describing risks in theory, create a structured risk assessment as if you were advising the organisation. Identify potential harms, such as bias, explainability challenges, or issues with training data quality. Assess likelihood and impact. Propose mitigation measures. Define what meaningful human oversight would look like.
Then write a short governance review memo addressed to senior leadership. Summarise the key risks, explain residual risk after controls, and recommend whether the system should proceed to deployment.
This project proves that you can think beyond policy and into decision-making. It shows that you understand not just compliance obligations but real-world consequences — and that you can communicate risk in a way executives understand.
Project 3: Responsible AI Policy & Operating Model
Many professionals talk about “Responsible AI,” but very few can design a realistic policy and operating structure.
In this project, draft a Responsible AI Policy for a mid-sized organisation. Define clear principles such as fairness, transparency, accountability, and safety — but don’t stop there. Show how those principles translate into process.
Describe how new AI use cases are submitted for review, who evaluates them, and how approval is documented. Define monitoring expectations and review intervals. Outline escalation paths if issues arise.
To strengthen the project, include a simple governance operating model diagram. Show which committee or function owns AI oversight. Indicate how legal, risk, security, and engineering interact. This connects directly to the “Govern” function of the NIST AI RMF and shows that you understand how governance is embedded structurally, not just philosophically.
This project demonstrates implementation maturity. It shows you can move from principles to practice.
Project 4: AI Incident Response & Regulatory Escalation Scenario
AI systems fail. The real question is whether the organisation is prepared when they do.
For this project, create a realistic AI failure scenario. For example, imagine an AI credit scoring system is found to disproportionately disadvantage a protected demographic group.
Walk through what happens next. How is the issue detected? Who is notified internally? Does the issue trigger regulatory reporting obligations? How is customer communication handled? What does root cause analysis look like? How is the model retrained and revalidated?
Structure this as a timeline over several weeks, showing investigation, escalation, remediation, and review.
This project aligns strongly with the “Manage” function of the NIST AI RMF and with the EU AI Act’s expectations around lifecycle risk management. It demonstrates that you understand governance as an ongoing discipline — not a one-time checklist.
Project 5: High-Risk AI Documentation & Conformity Pack
For the final project, simulate what documentation might look like for a high-risk AI system under the EU AI Act.
Imagine an AI system used in automated hiring decisions. Create a structured documentation pack that includes a clear statement of intended purpose, a summary of the risk management approach, a description of data governance practices, and an explanation of human oversight mechanisms. Include how logging and traceability are handled and how performance is monitored over time.
You don’t need to produce hundreds of pages. The goal is clarity and structure. Show that you understand what regulators expect in principle and how that translates into organised documentation.
This project signals regulatory literacy and discipline. It demonstrates that you can make governance defensible.

In 2026, AI governance is shifting from discussion to execution. Organisations don’t just need people who can quote the EU AI Act or summarise the NIST AI RMF. They need professionals who can operationalise those ideas into inventories, risk assessments, oversight processes, incident workflows, and documentation packs.

Anyone can say they understand AI governance. Very few can show how they would implement it.
